Possibly.

You can look over my WordPress trackback tutorial which gives you an overview of what trackbacks are and how to use them. :)

Hope that helps,

Isn't a trackback simply linking back to the blog post that you are discussing in your own blog post?

It's a little more involved than that Angela :)

In order for trackback/pingback to work, the two sites need to communicate with each other. Otherwise, you will not be linked from the site you reference in your blog entry.

If you just link with no communication between the two blogs, you're just linking.

How do you go about communicating then?

OR what is the correct way to communicate?

It depends on your blogging software.

If you're on blogger, you're SOL because trackbacks/pingbacks aren't supported. You'd need to use an outside service like HaloScan.

If you're using WordPress, I linked to a tutorial which explains it. If you're using MT or another blogging engine, then you'll need to reference the documentation for detailed instructions.

Hope that helps,

Don't forget the HUMAN element as well as the technical ones. Some people who read blogs and their comments also click on the links to sites that are supplying those comments... including the trackback links.

You'll get more clicks if you provide helpful comments rather than just trackbacks... but trackbacks alone CAN generate some extra traffic for you!
