i alredy answered this in another form.
before you go around spending money give Link Swapper a try.

it is a very good reliable easy to use tool. and it is free.
i will give you the url:
http://www.link-swapper.com

so you can decide for yourself

I haven't used the one mentioned above, but it's a php directory. Personally, I don't usually exchange links with someone using a php or dynamic links directory as the benefit of Google PageRank will likely be minimal and in some cases the pages may not be indexed at all. However, it looks like their example links directory is being indexed, but the site doesn't have any PageRank assigned.

I have written a couple of reviews on Arelis & Zeus. You may take a look at:

Link Exchange Software Reviews

But alas, these aren't free...but have some pretty great features and let you build html pages, find link partners (but be careful with Arelis's tool...it uses search engine bandwidth and Zeus is a better tool for this) and ensure your link partners continue to link back.

"Personally, I don't usually exchange links with someone using a php or dynamic links directory"

I will automatically refuse my link exchange requests being done on any "link managed" page including those with link swapper, zeus, etc (unless it has undergone MAJOR mods so that it is almost unrecognizable - to both me and google). Someone I have exchanged links with for two years recently changed his links page from hand made to the zeus directory and I pulled his link. It is too tempting to run a link farm with those things. Just my two cents of course LOL.

Hi foxtrot,

Have you had time to try out the link you got from condor? - what is your view on it as a tool to manage your links? - and what has been your experience with the traffic you are getting from it?

Very good point, Rae. Unfortunately, some people go nuts with links, resulting in over abundance of reciprocal links. And it's true, I often find that people using Zeus do this...but used as a smart tool for managing your links, it does have tremendous value.

Of course, you need to scrutinize every linking opportunity...html links page or not! :)

To clarify, I'm pretty sure you mean a links directory that uses redirects for the links, right? There's nothing inherently wrong with a links page/directory that uses php extensions or dynamic looking url's for their pages. It's usually how they link to your site that has mattered. Google says they index pretty much any file extension, though I personally prefer to use html extensions whenever possible.

My guideline is that I don't generally reciprocate links from most automated link direcories like zeus. I NEVER reply to an automated-looking email link request. And I don't usually want to trade links with a directory that uses redirects as the only link to my site.

And just a quick heads up on dynamic url's, the google results have recently been spewing dynamic variable ridden url's like you wouldn't believe. Don't know if this'll continue but they just threw out the old rule of thumb that they only consistently indexed up to 2 dynamic variables.

Now that does not mean I'd suggest you start using more dynamic variables in your url's.

Good luck,
Ross

No, I mean a links directory comprised of dynamic pages...but yes, redirects would be a bigger problem. In my experience, a php links directory *rarely* (not always) garners enough PR to be counted as a backlink in Google. Google is getting better at indexing dynamic content, but generally assigns it a lower PR.

BUT - I didn't say I wouldn't exchange links with someone with a php or dynamic directory. However, I look at the site, make sure the links pages are being indexed and assess the PageRank of the page. And most of the time that I check, it's not worth the effort. Don't get me wrong, PR doesn't totally guide me in my decision to link with someone...but I was trying to portray perceived value on the part of a potential link partner if a person's link directory was comprised of low-ranking php pages only.

I totally agree with you..I don't respond to automated queries either. I don't make them either, but I do use Arelis on one of my websites to keep track of who is linking to me and quickly adding links. This is what saves me tons of time and keeps me organized.

The problem with a lot of the software (from links managers to optimization software) is that you have know how to use them and use them appropriately. They often add a lot of features that are appealing to the consumer, but really aren't always valuable. If you use your noggin'...the tools are very handy. :)

Mostly agree with you but strongly disagree with 2 of your thoughts:
alice wrote:In my experience, a php links directory *rarely* (not always) garners enough PR to be counted as a backlink in Google.

File extension has nothing to do with PageRank value or a page's ability to pass PR. If a links page (in a directory on on any site) isn't *showing* PR, it's usually something like:
  • Not enough incoming PR from spiderable links, hence low PR (most common)
  • Robots.txt or other block
  • Toolbar page rank isn't accurate
  • New page or new links to it, PR not propageted yet
  • Some type of penalty (least common)
You also mentioned counting as a backlink. G has been more and more inconsistent with their regularity of updates and I really believe there are either some things broken or G is deliberately trying to make it harder for people to do SEO. Sure, a link showing as a backlink is one of the best indicators that we have, but I'm no longer using that as a definitive measure of PR worth. There could be a differnce in when G updates index, PR or backlink data. They don't neccessarily happen at the same time.

alice wrote:Google is getting better at indexing dynamic content, but generally assigns it a lower PR.
Yes, they're getting much better. No, they don't assign dynamically generated content a lower PR just because it's dynamically generated or has a dynamic url.

PR flows thru links that G'bot can follow regardless of whether the link is dynamic or static looking, regardless of whether the content is dynamically generated or not. Sometimes it looks like dynamic pages are dampened because 1)G'bot may not be able to follow all the links pointing to it, thus not giving it the PR that would come from those links, or 2) the ToolBar is screwed up.

I consulted for a client that had all .aspx pages last year. I encouraged them to change to a different extension, one reason being that the TB didn't show any PR on aspx pages. The pages showed a cache, ranked well & brought in nice traffic. They just didn't show TB PR. About 4 months into the project, the TB started showing PR for aspx pages. I still see weird TB PR fluctuations on those aspx pages. I don't think the real PR is changing every 30 seconds, the TB just doesn't get it's "indication of the PageRank" correct for some pages. I've been using the TB less & less for the last 12 months, in part becasue I think it's misleading in many cases.

Bottom line: PageRank has no direct correlation to file extension.

Hi Forum-Mates,

Question: Do "links pages" (pages with links to other domains) with PHP extensions have lower PageRank than do "links pages" with HTML extensions based solely on their extensions?

Answer: (YOU Be The Judge) ... What is YOUR answer? Yes or No

Here are some current (04/21/04) case studies to ponder.

Hee hee...you've been busy Sharon & Roy. From your study, the answer would be no, there isn't a lower rank...but hey, I'm still going by what I see as a general trend (no scientific studies done!). I'll take html over dynamic content any day...at least when it comes to search engines. :)

But you have shown that you need not be crippled by php...it is *possible* to rank well.

"Of course, you need to scrutinize every linking opportunity"

LOL... between all my sites I sometimes get 100 a week. Everything that looks automated or non-related is auto dumped. Then out of the rest, if I see Zues, links manager or what have you, I trash the request. I don't have time to spend sifting through their backlinks, etc to make sure they aren't a link farmer. And even then, as I said, the temptation is there for them to do it in the future ;).

"My guideline is that I don't generally reciprocate links from most automated link direcories like zeus."

Exactly. Not to say I wouldn't make an exception, but I'm usually to busy to bother with it to see if they're even worth the exception.

"If a links page (in a directory on on any site) isn't *showing* PR, it's usually something like"

In addition, most of these always seem to be www.domains.com/mainlinkarea/category/index.html - ok, not always THAT long, but you get the drift. It being so far down in the heirarchy (and since it usually isn't receiving a good amount of incoming links) of the site means it will only get a decent amount of PR if the PR to the main pages are very high.

"G is deliberately trying to make it harder for people to do SEO"

Gasp! Tell me it ain't so ;). LOL - yea, that's my guess too. Plus, links below PR4 do count, they just don't show in a backlink search.

"I'll take html over dynamic content any day"

Second Ross, easily agree on that. ;)
