Thanks to Imus, Stringer Hits Jackpot

Hey guys:

I thought you might find this story interesting.

Rutgers women's basketball coach, C. Vivian Stringer has parlayed the Don Imus incident into a lucrative new coaching contract and book deal with Crown Publishers.

Stringer will earn $450,000 in base pay and could earn up to $500,000 in additional compensation under terms of the new agreement, Rutgers said.

The 59-year-old Stringer had one year left on her existing contract and said negotiations actually began on a new contract about a year ago. But make no mistake, the dignity and eloquence with which she handled the Imus flap, certainly didn't hurt those negotiations.

The new agreement will make her one of the five highest paid women's college basketball coaches in the country.

Regarding her book deal, Stringer had apparently been trying to pitch her autobiography to book publishers for over a year with no takers. But thanks to Don Imus opening his big mouth, Stringer and her team are household names and publishers are suddenly interested. What a surprise.

According to a story published in the New Jersey Star Ledger, Stringer’s book will detail her experience with a daughter paralyzed from meningitis, the untimely death of her husband death at age 47 and, of course, the Don Imus drama.

Said Tina Constable, executive vice president for publicity at Crown.

"Vivian Stringer is an incredible woman with an extraordinary life story. She's a pioneer, a legend, an icon and a role model."

Constable declined to say how much the publishing company will pay Stringer.

Stringer's life does indeed read like a made for tv movie. She has 777 coaching wins, and is the only women's coach to take three different teams to the Final Four. She also has a son who was kicked off the North Carolina State football team for his involvement that led to someone being shot and killed.
