Google Adwords Tips For Affiliate Marketers

Postby Getagrip » Mon Dec 08, 2008 12:43 pm

The reason I'm writing this is because there are many beginners out there who throw away their hard earned dollars on Google Adwords. Since I don't want this to happen to you, here are some Google Adwords tips which can help you hold onto your hard earned cash:

1. Use Separate Bids And Adgroups For The Content Network.

There are various opinions on whether or not the Content Network is an effective form of pay per click advertising, because sometimes your ads are not targeted to the website they are displayed on. Because of this, many people turn the Content Network off. On the other hand, there are many people who do make money with the Content Network, so it may not be in your best interest to turn it off.

If you do decide to use the Content Network, you can save a lot of money by creating separate Adgroups and bids for the Content Network. The reason for this is because Content Network bids usually cost a lot less than Search Network bids. For example, if you are paying 20 cents a click for Search Network traffic, might be able to get bids on the same keywords for about 5 cents a click using the Content Network.

Having said all this, you may want to test what your ROI (return on investment) is with the Content Network vs only the Search Network. You may find that one converts better than the other – or one simply gives you a higher ROI than the other, but you won't know for sure until you do some testing.

2. Take Advantage Of Free Keyword Tools

You don't have to buy expensive keyword tools to get good keyword ideas. While keyword tools can be a great starting point to generate good keywords, make sure to USE YOUR BRAIN to come up with keyword ideas that keyword tools will never give you.

Below are links to a couple of great free keyword tools. The first is basically a free online thesaurus. The second is the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Play around with these tools a bit and you can get thousands of great keywords. One thing I'd suggest is to use these keyword tools as a starting point, and then do a little brainstorming to expand on the keywords they give you.

3. Use Very Specific, Targeted Keywords

What you don't want to do is bid on the same keywords that everyone else is bidding on, which are often very broad, not targeted, expensive, and unprofitable. Instead, use laser targeted keywords that are very specific to what your potential buyer is looking for. Consider the following examples:

cell phone (not specific enough)

Motorola cell phone (better, but still not very specific)

refurbished unlocked Motorola V300 cell phone (a lot more specific and targeted)

One rule of thumb is to use keyword phrases that consist of AT LEAST 3 or 4 words. As you can see from the above example, the more words the keyword phrase had in it, the more targeted it was.

4. Don't Throw A Bunch Of Unrelated Keywords Into One Adgroup.

One thing a lot of people do is throw thousands of unrelated keywords into a single adgroup. This is a bad idea. For example, if you are selling Star Wars collectibles, don't create a single adgroup using unrelated keywords such as:

Adgroup 1:

Luke Skywalker action figure
Han Solo laser gun
Princess Lea costume
Obiwan Kenobe lightsaber

Instead, create multiple adgroups using similar keywords such as:

Adgroup 1:

Luke Skywalker action figure
Luke Skywalker lightsaber
Luke Skywalker X Wing fighter
Luke Skywalker photograph

Do you see the difference between the first and second examples? Group similar keywords into the same adgroup, and create new adgroups for keywords that are different than keywords in existing adgroups.

5. Use Your Keyword In Your Ad, And Also In The Headline Of Your Ad

Google gives quality points when your ad matches the keywords you bid on, and also the keywords on your website. This will help your ad stand out from others, since the keywords in your ad will be bolded, which will increase your click through rate (CTR), which will hopefully increase your ROI. Additionally, this increases relevancy, which increases your quality score, which in turn gives you a lower cost per click. On a related note, you can also increase your quality by linking to a multi-page website – in fact, Google may penalize you and increase your bids to $5 to $10 per click for bad quality and for linking to a single page website.

6. Don't Overspend Per Click - This Is VERY IMPORTANT.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when using Google Adwords is spend way too much money per click on web pages that don't convert. While it is virtually impossible to find out how well a website will convert without doing some testing, it is important to be as conservative as possible with your bids. The reason for this is that the conversion rate for many websites will be less than 1 in 100, which means that the website receives less than 1 sale for every 100 clicks – some websites won't convert 1 sale in 300 clicks!

In order to find out how much you should bid, the first thing you need to do is find out how much commission you will earn for the specific item you are promoting. To do this, divide the total price of your commission by 100 to get the maximum cost you should spend per click (assuming 1 sale for every 100 clicks). For example, if you expect your commission to be $25, divide $25/100 to get a maximum 25 cents per click. This means that if 1 person out of every 100 people who clicks on your ad makes a purchase that gives you a $25 commission, you would break even.

Your website may convert at a higher rate than 1 in 100 meaning that you can raise your bid price a little if you are willing to risk more, but keep in mind that there is no guarantee that your website will convert at 1 in 300, so try and be as conservative as possible, at least when starting out. If the keywords you want are more expensive than your maximum cost per click, try to think of related phrases with less competition that might trigger the same ad – these may have a lower cost per click associated with them.

7. Use Free Marketing Methods Before Jumping Into Google Adwords

Because Google Adwords is such a complex topic, there are many points that I was not able to cover – I'd probably have to write a book to cover everything! However, I hope these tips will help you out if you are struggling to get off the ground with Google Adwords.

Having said this, while Adwords can be very profitable, a lot of people lose money when they use it, because they really don't know what they are doing. If you are just getting started with internet marketing, I'd suggest learning the free methods of online promotion first, then moving on to Google Adwords after you have made some money with the free methods.same ad – these may have a lower cost per click associated with them.

AdWords is Google's flagship advertising product and main source of revenue . AdWords offers pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, and site-targeted advertising for both text and banner ads. The AdWords program includes local, national, and international distribution. Google's text advertisements are short, consisting of one title line and two content text lines. Image ads can be one of several different Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) standard sizes.
