Hi Lynn,
While I agree with most of what Oregon Coast Guy said (affiliate payouts are better in my book), the amount a blogger will make from AdSense actually depends on the topic of the blog and the willingness for readers to click-through.
On some of my blogs (with barely any traffic), I earn a good chunk of change from AdSense, however, other blogs barely earn me pennies although the traffic is higher.
If your blog is on a topic that doesn't offer great payouts or has an ad-blind audience, AdSense probably isn't the best way to go. Consider selling text link adverts, in house banner space, and affiliate program revenue.
Now, to answer your original question, you could place a 120x160 banner in your side column under your navigation. You could also place a 468px banner just above your first blog entry and on the individual pages, either just above the start of the content or between the content and the start of the comment section.
Hope that helps,
~ Teli
