Create a sitemap for your blogger account fast and easy!

Postby SuperSimpleGuy » Fri Mar 09, 2007 10:31 pm

Wahooo!!

I found out how to make a sitemap the easiest and quickest way for
my blogspot blog! Only two quick steps required!

I- First step

a- Log into your Google Webmaster Tools account

b- Click on "Add a sitemap"
(supposedly that you already added your blog's URL to your account)

c- Choose a sitemap type: click the "v" radio bouton and select "Add General Type Sitemap"

d- Fill in the box your blog's url, for instance: If your blog's address is
http://example.blogspot.com

You should enter:
http://example.blogspot.com/atom.xml

And click on "Add Web Sitemap" under that box.

That's the first step. The second step is even quicker:

Step II:

a- Log into your blogger account

b- Click on "Settings" then "Template" and finally on "Edit HTML"

c- Copy this meta tag: <meta name="verify-v1" content="unique-string"/>

and paste it in the <head> section, just under it,
for me on my template <head> is on the 8th line counting from the beginning.

then hit "Save Template" (don’t worry if you have a " Could not display
this page" message, just hit previous, make sure the meta tag you posted
is still there.

You can try to save once again, just to be sure, then click on "Page Elements"
to get out from that page.

We're just a click away from validating the sitemap now:

Go back to your Google Webmaster Tool account and click on the link
on the right "URLs submitted" and VOILA!! That's it! :D

What did your account tell you? Don't worry if you got out from your
account (maybe your connexion expires) login once again if necessary to
your Google Webmaster Tools, then just open your eyes; what do you
see? Haha! Yes you did it! Told you it is easy

Ok I'm excited I overcame this thing, I was stressed thinking about
being desindexed from Google because of Blogger bugs.

Anyway, that's ok now.

Hope this helped,

See you,
SSG

Is this for the new blogspot blogs? I didn't realize that the blogs had a way that you could have a site map without actually posting one as a post?

Yoh Angelaaa :)

The benefits you can have by making the sitemap is having
a better chance of indexation for Google.

Your sitemap, when you validate it to Google, let's google spiders
travel more easily in your Blogger blog and collect the info they need,
in a easier way.

But you must keep in mind that while this is said to be
helpful to the visibility of your blog for google, this doesn't guarantee
that all your pages (your posts, determined by the links that exist in your
blog) are going to be indexed into Google.

Being indexed more easily, and preparing your blog to be analysed easier
by Google bots, means that the Google spiders have more chance to
understand better and quicker the kind of content you're covering, this
is determined by your keywords. So there is a possibility to let your
blog take a better raking amongst your competitors for your keywords,
and your visitors may find you more easily when they do search on Google.

I hope I didn't complicate things LOL

See you,
Karim

Thank you for taking the time to explain this to me.

I actually have a blog where I am indexed as #1 on google for a certain string of words.

I don't have what you are talking about on that blog.

So, I think for now I will just leave things as they are and concentrate on my writing.

Sometimes it's good not to worry too much about optimization to the point of obsession. (And I'm not saying that is what you are doing)

I guess what I'm saying is that while it's good to learn about how to optimize it's important to remember not to let your writing go.

After all, it's for the love of blogging first and foremost, right?

Hi Angela,

You're welcome :)

Yes you are right, the most important thing is concentrate on working
on your blogs and having fun. I visited some of your blogs yesterday
and I find them simple and cute! Sorry I didn't have time to read ;)

Now I'll tell you why I was obliged to create a sitemap for one of my
blogs, it was an emergency solution I really needed to do to save
my visibility into Google's index, and then it was not for some obsession
and I know you're not telling this about me LOL ;)

So what was my BIG problem? It is simple. As you may already know
Blogger starts to become strange from time to time and bugs can drive
you crazy, like this thing that happened to me: I couldn't control the loss
of the links of my posts in my main blog, these links were my post titles
that existed into my archive section, but for an unknown reason, certainly
a bug of some sort, all these links vanished. I tried to get them back,
but I couldn't. Ok, until that point I was really being worried for my readers
to find these titles, because I want to show them these topics so that they
can chose between the different posts according to their needs.

But very soon, and very quickly, I noticed that my blog started to vanish
from Google!!! Because I check everytime some keywords to see
what other people are saying about the same subject I'm covering.

My blog literally was taken off of Google! Emergency! I needed to act
quickly, and I knew I never put a sitemap before and that could help
me with indexation... so I searched for the solution, and it was not
easy to find! That's why I posted the first thread, with a smile on my face, LOL.

From my readings, I learned that Google bots can find your posts thanks
to the links of each blog post. So I think it made sense that the Google
bots were no longer able to see my posts, because my post links
vanished from my sidebar. This is strange, Google bots should not need
these links to analyse my blog, but for some reason, that was what
happened, or at least I think.

What I did was doing the right things for the sitemap, and also, I created
a links section dedicated to all of my posts, so that I can have control
over them and never wait for the next bug to take them off.

Finally, a sitemap, wether you have a blog or website, should help you
index your wabsite or blog much more quickly and more accurately
into any other search engines, not just Google.

You should use Google's standards to do so, because Google, Yahoo! and
MSN now are cooperating together to have one standard for the sitemaps,
that means that all the other search engines will follow. Take a look here:
http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pre ... psorg.html

You can learn more about the sitemap protocol (with a easier to understand style, lol!)
on this Google's link:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools ... tocol.html

Voilà! Hope it helps!

See you,
SSG
